Nathan Drake is dolphinback skybax rider, bonded with the skybax Thundra. Of Australian and American origins, Nathan was shipwrecked in Dinotopia alongside his twin sister Constance in the spring of 1878. After his arrival, Nathan undertook a months-long journey to track down his sister. Nathan's travels brought him across nearly all of Dinotopia's habitats, saw him meet some of the island's most prominent personalities, and also resulted in Nathan bonding with Thundra.
Background[]
Nathan Drake was born in 1861.[1] He has a twin sister, Constance. Their parents were anthropologists who worked in Australia, where Constance and Nathan spent most of their early lives.[2] Constance and Nathan have both American and Australian heritage.[1] Many of their childhood nights were spent around campfires on expeditions in the Australian outback.[2]
Nathan is ambitious, adventurous, and devoted to his twin sister.[1]
Biography[]
Arrival in Dinotopia[]
In the spring of 1878, Nathan and Constance's parents died in an accident. The Drakes were invited to stay with their aunt Eugenia in Boston. Although reluctant to leave Australia, they departed a fortnight after receiving the invitation, onboard the schooner Sojourner. The Drakes brought their parents' scientific papers and correspondence, considering it unthinkable to leave their work behind. The Sojourner was blown off course by storms which eventually grew so violent that Constance was washed overboard and Nathan nearly drowned trying to save her.[2]
After waking up on the beaches of Dinotopia, Nathan immediately set out to find Constance, who he believed to still be alive. He encountered some locals, including a Parasaurolophus, but was unable to communicate with them. Nathan eventually reached Romano's Hatchery, where he met Theona.[3] Theona introduced Nathan to Dinotopia and its language, helping him to pick up enough key phrases to be able to speak to others. Before leaving the hatchery to continue his search, Nathan helped Giorgio Romano and Alec Orchardwine to repair the hatchery's windmill, damaged in the storm.[4]
Search for Constance[]
Atrik, Nathan's self-appointed Dimorphodon guide
After leaving the hatchery, Nathan hitched a ride with the Stegosaurus brothers Kurfot and Zooker to Pumice Town. There, he met the merchant Onno, who had acquired Constance's gold locket.[5] Nathan played a game of treble with Onno and learnt that she had gotten the locket from Lee Crabb. Nathan found Crabb in a tavern and learnt that Crabb had taken Constance to Waterfall City in return for the locket. Nathan traveled to Waterfall City with Kurfot and Zooker. As he explored the city, he was aided by his new self-appointed guide, the Dimorphodon Atrik. In the Hall of Knowledge, they learnt from Nallab that Constance had signed the Guest Registry only three days prior but was no longer in the city. Kurfot and Zooker requested payment to continue taking Nathan places, so Nathan spent some time putting together a self-made gramophone for them.
Nathan and Atrik tracked Constance to the Temple Ruins in the Rainy Basin, where they met the revered Brokehorn. Brokehorn tasked Nathan with finding his lost nephew Snapfire, who Brokehorn said had left together with Constance mere days prior, seeking to find the World Beneath. Nathan and Atrik traversed the jungle on foot and eventually found a tunnel through the Forbidden Mountains, reaching the Amu Canyon. There, they stumbled upon a skybax training center, where they met the instructor Flynn. Nathan learnt from Flynn of the "aerial challenge", part of skybax rider training, and as per the tradition leapt off a cliff platform in the hopes of being caught by a skybax. Nathan was caught by the skybax Thundra, with whom he instantly bonded and became friends.
Nathan and Atrik flew on Thundra across Dinotopia in search for Constance and helped various Dinotopians as they went. In the Savannah, they stopped at the Refinery and helped the foreman Hardback to prevent a build-up of explosive gas pressure. In Treetown, they helped make Purple Elixir for the sore-throated Brachiosaurus Magnecia. In the Forbidden Mountains, they climbed Mount Blackshear and met Levka Gambo, who gave Nathan a sunstone. No trace of Constance was found in either place. In the Great Desert, they helped the old and blind Nestar to find the way home to his village, Gritty Mesa. While exploring the desert they found a sundial by the desert shoreline. They tinkered with it for some time and managed to open a passage, revealing the sundial to be a secret entrance into the World Beneath.
Nathan and Atrik found an abandoned submersible, which they used to traverse the caves. The submersible was powered with the sunstone Nathan had gotten from Gambo. Their journey saw them troubled by the Dunkleosteuses who lived in the caves, though these were largely scared off with the submersible's electrocution and ink systems. They eventually reached a large caverns with the ruins of an abandoned city, where Nathan at last found Constance and Snapfire. Constance had managed to discover a way off of Dinotopia, though she and Nathan decided that they would stay on the island.
Nathan, Atrik, Constance, and Snapfire made their way back to Waterfall City on foot since Thundra was not strong enough to carry Snapfire. Upon returning to Waterfall City they were met with a joyous welcome ceremony. During the ceremony, Brokehorn welcomed Nathan and Constance as citizens of Dinotopia.
Later life[]
After returning to Waterfall City, Nathan began his formal studies at the Hall of Knowledge.[6]
In 1892, Nallab encouraged Nathan to write memoirs recounting his experiences in Dinotopia so that these could be added to the Hall of Knowledge. The resulting writings eventually became The Dinotopian Memoir of Nathan Drake.[7]
