Megaloceros, also known as "giant deer" or "Irish elk", is a genus of deer comprising some of the largest and tallest known species of all time. The Megaloceros herds of Dinotopia live within the cooler, temperate climate of the Forbidden Mountains.
Male Megaloceros (known as bucks or stags) are most famous for their massive antlers (or "racks"), which could measure up to 3.65 meters (12 ft) across and weigh up to 40 kg (88 lbs). Like outworld deer species, the male deer's antlers are shed and re-grown each year at the onset of warmer weather. Females, or does, are only moderately smaller; the largest Megaloceros specimens measure over 2 m (+7 ft) at the shoulder and could have a body weight in excess of 700 kg (+1,500 lbs).
