Synopsis[]
"Andrew, the son of a Dinotopian innkeeper, makes a strange discovery one night when a hooded dinosaur leads him and two friends to a remote, sealed-off city. When they begin to explore the forbidden area, the trio are thrust into a dangerous adventure--one they can survive only if they can put aside their chronic rivalries and come to understand the lost race of Troodons, who have existed there in seclusion for centuries."
Premise[]
The official premise of Lost City, from the book's back cover, reads:[1]
In search of adventure, thirteen-year-old Andrew convinces his friends, Lian and Ned, to explore the forbidden Lost City. But the last thing they expect to discover is a group of meat-eating Troodons! For centuries, this lost tribe of dinosaurs has lived secretly in the crumbling city. Now Andrew and his friends are trapped! They must talk the tribe into joining the rest of Dinotopia. Otherwise the Troodons may try to protect their secrets by making Andrew, Ned, and Lian citizens of the Lost City—for good!

Development[]
Production and writing[]
Lost City is the fifth novel in the Dinotopia Digest series, a line of youth novels by various authors envisioned as a way to expand the world of Dinotopia with new storylines and characters.[2]
As for all the Digest novels,[2] the cover illustration of Lost City was painted by Michael Welply.[3]
Publication history[]
The release of Lost City was first announced in the front matter of the first two books in the Digest line, Windchaser and River Quest, slated for a 'fall 1995' release, around the same time as Hatchling.[4][5] Lost City was for unknown reasons delayed, with the front matter of Hatchling simply stating that Lost City was 'coming soon'.[6] Originally set to be the fourth novel in the Digest series, Lost City was first published on 30 June 1996, about a month after Sabertooth Mountain, by the New York-based publisher Random House.
Ciencin enjoyed writing in the world of Dinotopia and expanding the mythology established by the original books.[7] Although most of the Digest novels were standalone stories, Lost City was followed by two sequels written by Ciencin: Return to Lost City (2000) and The Explorers (2001). Together, the three books make up the Tales of the Troodon Knights trilogy.[8]
