Anancus is a genus of gomphothere that lives in the Forbidden Mountains. Their fossils have been found in Africa, Europe, and Asia. Anancus stands around 3 metres (9.8 ft) tall, and closely resembles an elephant. It has two tusks, whereas most other gomphotheres have four. Aside from its somewhat shorter legs, Anancus is also different from modern elephants in that its tusks are much longer, up to 4 m (13 ft) in length. The molars are not composed of lamellae like those of true elephants, but have cusps, like tapir and pig molars. Although not as famous, Anancus is at least as big as its cousins the mammoths.
