Allosaurus (pronounced /ˌæləˈsɔrəs/) is a genus of large theropod dinosaur that lives in the Rainy Basin and the Blackwood Flats. The name Allosaurus means "different lizard" and is derived from the Greek αλλος/allos ("different, strange") and σαυρος/sauros ("lizard"). They are one of several large carnivorous species inhabiting Dinotopia.
Allosaurus is a large bipedal predator with a large skull, equipped with dozens of large, sharp teeth. It averages 8.5 meters (30 ft) in length. Relative to the large and powerful hindlimbs, its three-fingered forelimbs are small, and the body is balanced by a long, heavy tail. It is classified as an allosaurid, a type of carnosaurian theropod dinosaur.
Allosaurus inhabit the Blackwood Flats of Dinotopia's south, sharing their habitat with Red-faced Tyrannosaurus.
As the prominent large predator in the Blackwood Flats, Allosaurus is at the top of the food chain, preying on large herbivorous dinosaurs. Prey includes Camptosaurus, Triceratops, and Ornitholestes.
